With the growth of sim-racing, many gamers are now thinking of getting into it, and the various equipment available doesn’t make it easy for amateur drivers. The sim-racing market is busy at the moment, I must say, with brands targeting specific segments.

For beginners, we have Thrustmaster and Logitech who have very firm positions for obvious reasons: an unbeatable selling price. And for someone who wants to get into virtual racing, it’s best to spend as little as possible.

Enthusiasts and seasoned riders have their own brands of choice, such as Fanatec, Moza and Simagic. These three manufacturers compete in a rather juicy segment, with the greatest potential for innovation. If you’re looking for quality, immersive and relatively affordable products, you’ll find what you’re looking for with these three brands.

And then there are the professional drivers. Some of these are turning to solutions tailored to their needs, offered by the likes of Simucube and Heusinkveld. However, these two brands are very premium, and often charge stratospheric prices. As a result, professional drivers often use Fanatec or Simagic peripherals for performance and budget reasons. It has to be said that not everyone can afford a Direct Drive base costing over €3,000 to run laps on Assetto Corsa.

Speaking of this simulation game, it’s very popular among seasoned racers. In what follows, I’m going to present you with a list of the best sim-racing wheels for this title. The list will be divided into two categories: Touring/GT and Formula.

Fanatec ClubSport Steering Wheel GT V2

mclaren gt3 v2

Fanatec ‘s ClubSport GT V2 is a 33 cm-diameter wheel with a flat bottom. Its structure uses brushed aluminum, covered in suede leather. The finish is just perfect, as is the grip on the wheel.

You should know that this steering wheel is technically bare-bone, and the controls are located on the ClubSport Universal Hub at the rear. There are 2 magnetic paddles and 13 Audi R8 and AMG GT-style buttons. A complete set of controls, easily accessible in the middle of a race.

This steering wheel pairs with a Fanatec base, unless you take the Podium Hub, which unlocks the use of other bases. There’s also an alcantara version of the same steering wheel, and one for Xbox.

Moza CS V2P

mclaren gt3 v2

Moza is a fairly young brand in sim-racing, but has nevertheless managed to carve out a good share of the market. Its catalog includes several flywheels, including the CS V2P. This wheel is fairly standard, looking very much like the ClubSport GT V2. We also have a 33 cm diameter, but entirely round this time.

The frame is made of aluminum alloy, with forged carbon-fiber paddles. Like the ClubSport, the CS V2P’s controls are distributed along the sides of the faceplate and form part of the back-plate, which acts as a hub if you like.

The ergonomics of this steering wheel are excellent, largely due to the placement of the controls and the diameter of the wheel. The CS V2P is used with a Moza Racing base, and there’s a nicer, better-finished version with forged carbon fiber, which is the RS V2, but you’ll have to pay €170 more for it.

Moza KS

mclaren gt3 v2

The Moza KS represents the Chinese brand’s entry-level GT range, with a rather low price compared to the competition. This steering wheel is available as a stand-alone unit, or with a hub kit for use on platforms other than the Moza platform.

In terms of diameter, we’re talking about a 30 cm wheel, with a typical GT shape (rectangular). The KS structure is made of carbon fiber composite, which is just a way of saying that it’s plastic.

The KS buttons are on the sides of the bib, making them easy to use. However, many riders have mentioned that they sometimes stick in use, and Moza doesn’t seem to mind this too much. As for the paddles, we have 4 on the rear, two of which act as Dual Clutch for the clutch.

Moza GS V2P GT

mclaren gt3 v2

The GS V2P GT is a beautiful wheel, and a premium one too, perfect for sim-racing on Assetto Corsa. With a 5 mm forged carbon fiber faceplate, the GS V2P GT allows you to set blistering lap times on the world’s most legendary circuits, without the slightest problem, while still having a wheel that’s not too heavy.

Ergonomics are well served. The 30 cm diameter makes it easy to hold, and the layout of the controls reinforces this. All buttons, switches and encoders are within easy reach, whatever your sim-racing discipline (mainly GT and F1).

At the rear, 4 forged carbon-fiber magnetic paddles are superbly positioned for rapid gear shifting. Moza’s QR is also located at the rear, providing excellent attachment to the brand’s chainstays. On the other hand, some feedback suggests that longevity isn’t great. And the same goes for Simagic’s QR, which bears a striking resemblance to Moza’s.

Simagic GT1 Pro HUB

mclaren gt3 v2

The Simagic GT1 is a steering wheel that looks a lot like the CS V2P, or rather the RS V2. Its 33 cm diameter gives it a very good grip, and this is accentuated by the location of the controls very close to your hands on the rear hub.

The steering wheel uses brushed aluminum for its structure and a leather or alcantara surround. Design-wise, it’s more or less the same as the Moza steering wheel, but more sober. All is black, except for the red stitching on the leather.

The steering wheel is available in a choice of round or flat-bottomed versions, and in both wheel materials (leather and alcantara). With the GT1, you’ll be able to race Assetto Corsa in all disciplines.

Formula steering wheels for Assetto Corsa

Fanatec ClubSport Formula V2.5

mclaren gt3 v2

We find Fanatec on this list, also with a ClubSport wheel. The Formula V2.5 uses 5 mm carbon fiber for its structure, with aluminum paddles and leather.

Controls are comprehensive, with a total of 11 buttons, encoders, switches, 2 paddles and joysticks. What’s more, the Formula V2.5’s controls are very close to your hands, making it perfect for sim-racing.

Moza FSR

mclaren gt3 v2

In my opinion, the FSR represents a budget-friendly entry to Simagic’s FX Pro. It features a 3mm-thick carbon-fiber structure, a large 4.5″ display in the center, 4 paddles (2 magnetic and 2 clutch), and numerous controls spread across the entire steering wheel. The diameter is 28 cm, with a closed rectangular shape.

The FSR is at the top end of Moza Racing’s range, with perhaps the Vision GS competing in this respect, but it’s not at all the same wheel category.

Simagic FX Pro

mclaren gt3 v2

Simagic is present on this list, and its products are qualitative. The FX Pro is a Formula-type steering wheel, specifically for F1. The diameter of this wheel is 29 cm, with a rectangular shape.

The FX Pro’s carbon-fiber structure means it weighs just 1.7 kg. In terms of controls, it’s pretty much what you’d find on a single-seater, with a large 4.3″ screen in the center displaying a host of telemetric data to the rider. There are also 6 paddles at the rear (4 magnetic, 2 of which are configurable, and 2 Dual Clutch). The FX Pro is just magnificent on any sim-racing setup.

Honorable Mention

Fanatec BMW M4 GT3

mclaren gt3 v2

The Fanatec BMW M4 GT3 is a GT-style wheel that currently equips M4s in GT3 competition. This wheel was developed in collaboration with BMW, and features a forged carbon fiber structure, GT3-specific controls and a minimalist design. However, its retail price is a hefty €1,500, which is why it features in the honorable mention, as few racers can afford to buy it. And it’s in limited supply too. So…
