Fans of racing games where destruction is predominant, you’re in for a treat! Wreckfest 2 is in the starting blocks for early access on Steam at the end of March 2025, i.e. in around one and a half months’ time. The first opus was a great success, especially with the community who enjoyed EA’s Burnout series, where the watchwords are race and destruction, set to AC/DC-style rock music. Ah, it must be said that those were the good old days, when carefree fun was part of our daily lives.
A brief history of Wreckfest
For those unfamiliar with Wreckfest, it’s a racing game revolving around destruction, as in the “demolition races” that are so popular in the USA. You’re on a track, and the objective is to be the last to roll. It’s a kind of battle royale, but for cars.
Wreckfest exploits this game mode, and it has to be said that it’s a lot of fun. Finnish studio Bugbear Entertainment released the first opus in 2018, and it was a big hit with fans of pissed-off racing.
Physics, and above all visuals, being at the heart of such a title, Wreckfest stood out for its beautiful graphics, reproducing car damage with excellent fidelity. And it’s this, in addition to the races where you literally have to blow up your opponents, that made the title such a success.
Wreckfest 2: early access imminent on Steam
The sequel to Wreckfest was announced in the summer of 2024, with no specific release or early access date. But the latest news, including a trailer on YouTube, announces early access on Steam on March 20, 2025.
The game will use the studio’s latest graphics engine, Romu, which claims to produce ultra-realistic physics and breathtakingly detailed damage. We’re talking crumpled sheet metal, exploding tires on hard impacts, gradually fading paintwork showing the color of the gray sheet metal underneath, and so on. Also, new technologies for on-track audio, which, according to the studio, will be a “game changer” in the category.
When is Wreckfest coming and on what platforms?
Well, there’s not a lot of information on these points. All we know is that the title will go into early access on Steam on March 20, 2025, and will then be available on PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5. As for the price, it’s a bit of a fog, but we can certainly expect it to cost between €60 and €70.
