Assetto Corsa is a sim-racing must-have for both amateur and professional drivers. This title has far surpassed the appellation of “video game”, so much so that it is used, as well as being in the mind, by every virtual racer in the world.

Released over 10 years ago, this sim-racing title is available on all platforms, whether console or PC. Very popular in the sim-racing community for obvious reasons, notably the realism of its physics engine, its beautiful graphics and its support for various mods. In fact, it’s one of the strengths for which it’s world-renowned. These mods can be used to add content to the basic game, to enhance the experience, to make driving more enjoyable or to push realism even further. The Internet offers a wealth of mods for video games, including Assetto Corsa.

In this article, we take a look at the 10 best mods currently available for Assetto Corsa on PC. Their ranking in the list in no way indicates their level of importance, just the feel of the writing.

The 10 best mods for Assetto Corsa

Let’s get to the heart of the matter: the 10 best mods on Assetto Corsa. First of all, this list is purely subjective, and this means that my ranking, as well as its mods, will differ from other people’s. Nevertheless, many of you will certainly agree on some of the names I’m going to mention next.

The content manager

The Content Manager is a mod, as the name suggests, that allows you to manage the content of the Assetto Corsa title, particularly in terms of vehicles, tracks and other mods. Yes, it’s a mod that facilitates the management of other mods. It’s a bit weird to read, but it really works.

This mod also lets you customize the game’s interface, as well as its launch behavior, server connection and performance analysis. The interface is user-friendly and easy to navigate. There are options for vehicles and vehicle management, weather, number of laps, track temperature, and a host of other pre-race settings. The content manager is a real must-have for sim-racing fans, and virtually all racers agree on this point.

Soil

Another mod that must be installed is Sol. Its name can be misleading for the uninitiated, and it’s not a mod that allows you to modify the ground, but rather one that controls the weather on the track.

Assetto Corsa doesn’t include dynamic weather as standard. You have options like rain or clouds over the track, but this doesn’t change during the race. And that’s where Sol comes in.

This is an excellent mod that enhances Assetto Corsa’s weather conditions, promoting immersion and increasing realism. With Sol, you have dynamic weather options that change in the middle of the race, you have the day and night cycle that can change during your laps and highlight sunsets and sunrises, snow, rain of course, ice, and anything else that has anything to do with the weather.

This mod is complete, as well as being a must-have for sim-racing if you’re looking for realism.

Custom shader pack

mclaren gt3 v2

It’s not often said, but Assetto Corsa was released over 10 years ago, and that’s something you notice quickly, especially if you’re a gamer who dabbles in a bit of everything. And embarking on 10 years of existence is something that stands out in the world of video games.

To give the title a facelift, we’ve included a custom shader pack that considerably enhances the game’s graphics. For example, you get dynamic lighting and more detailed weather, especially when coupled with the Sol mod we saw earlier. You also get revised shadows and reflections, etc.

This mod isn’t really essential to the driving experience, but visually, it gives a good layer of make-up to a sim-racing game that’s no longer really young, especially when compared to titles released in recent years.

Real F1 Car Mods

This mod, or rather collection of mods developed by SDD (Sim Dream Development), adds several cars and vehicle categories to Assetto Corsa, ranging from racing cars to everyman’s cars, as well as the famous single-seaters of the top category: Formula 1.

The F1 cars offered by this mod span several generations, from the legendary V10s that screamed at over 17,000 rpm, to the more recent V6 hybrids that spit out nearly 1,000 horsepower. This mod is simply perfect for those who find EA Sports’ sim-racing title not quite to their liking.

Endurance World Championship 2023

mclaren gt3 v2

This mod features the 2023 World Endurance Championship, or WEC 2023. It’s an excellent mod for endurance racing enthusiasts, and especially fans of the Porsche RSR and other exotic cars in this championship.

The addition of this mod to Assetto Corsa will allow you to immerse yourself in the 2023 WEC season, with all the teams and their cars, skins and tracks at your disposal. You’ll be able to race LMH, LMP2 and LMGTE cars. Basically, you’ll have hypercars, GT2s (which will no longer be allowed from the 2024 season, and you’re no doubt aware of this if you’re a fan) and GT3s as we like to call them.

The 2023 World Endurance Championship is a superb mod for fans of endurance racing in particular, especially if the 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit is legendary for you. You’ll be able to race where Ferrari and Ford had their clash in the 60s. And if you’ve got a sim-racing setup with an endurance bent, this mod is simply a must-have for Assetto Corsa.

2REAL traffic simulation

mclaren gt3 v2

The 2REAL Traffic Simulation mod can be seen as a cross between Need For Speed or Forza Horizon and Assetto Corsa. In other words: the combination of an open-road arcade title and a racing simulation title.

The principle is simple: the mod adds traffic to non-racing car tracks. These vehicles are controlled by an AI that manages their movement, their interaction with each other and with you, their behavior on the track and a whole host of other mod-specific parameters.

You might ask: what’s the point in the end? And that’s a good question. The answer is quite simple: to add realism to the title. This mod is not intended to encourage you to drive like Fast & Furious on the open road, far from it. It only aims to add unpredictability to racing. With everyday cars on the track that don’t behave like racing cars, you’ll find it harder to determine their movements and anticipate their reactions. As a result, you’ll develop reflexes that will enable you to improve on the track, gradually becoming a better driver.

It’s a great mod as far as I’m concerned for riders who are looking for new challenges, and above all to improve in real driving conditions.

Touge project

mclaren gt3 v2

I’m sure you’re familiar with Initial D, so I don’t really need to introduce one of the world’s best manga/animated car series. This mod takes the same concept as Initial D and implements it in Assetto Corsa. The result: drifting races on mountain roads and hills to relive what Takumi felt at the wheel of his Toyota AE86 while delivering Tofu.

This mod offers almost 50 kilometers of open-world driving. You’ll be able to drive wherever you like, while drifting along with glides that will take your breath away, and most likely give you a heart condition.

Drifting is a whole art of driving, where the driver’s precision and skill are far more important than pure speed, even if the drifting world record is over 300 km/h askew. The art of drifting originated in Japan in the 1980s, on often empty mountain roads, especially at night to avoid accidents. Drifting has grown enormously over the last 20 years, and has become a discipline in its own right: Formula D, with big names such as Keiichi Tsuchiya, considered the Drift King, and Vaughn Gittin Jr.

Thanks to Projet Touge, you’ll be able to learn the art of car traverses on winding mountain and hill roads, which should be a great help if you decide to go drifting for real on a racetrack.

Porsche P91 Hybrid Evo

mclaren gt3 v2

So, this mod allows us to drive the legendary Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo, the world record holder on the Green Hell: the Nordschleife. The time? Just under 5 minutes and 20 seconds. To be precise, the 919 clocked 05:19:546 on the northern loop, a time faster than an F1 car! This record was set in June 2018, shortly after the same car had set the fastest time at Spa-Francorchamps in April 2018 with a time of 01:41:770, but it fell under attack from Hamilton and his F1 of the time immediately afterwards.

With the Porsche P91 Hybrid Evo mod, you’ll have the pleasure, and above all the privilege, of driving this magnificent and fearsomely fast car in Assetto Corsa. Given its performance, I think it should be classed as a fighter jet, so powerful is this machine, and so fast on the track.

The Porsche develops 720 hp from a combustion engine, and this is coupled with 440 hp from an electric motor. The result is more than 1,000 HP, with a focus on aero and downforce.

If you want to try your luck on the Nurb North Loop, the Porsche P91 mod is just what you need.

RSS GT Pack

mclaren gt3 v2

Who isn’t a Saleen S7 fan? Between you and me, I think it’s one of the most beautiful cars in the world, especially when you hear its 7-liter V8 spitting out 550 horsepower, then 750 thanks to two Spiny Boys (turbos) as the North Americans say.

With the RSS GT Pack mod, you get a total of 6 GT cars from the 1990s and early 2000s. We’re talking Saleen S7-R, Ferrari 550 and 575, Dodge Viper GTS-R, Lister Storm and Lamborghini Murcielago R-GT. These cars represent the golden age of motorsport, when the emphasis was on uncompromising performance, not to mention the sweet melody that emanates from their screaming engines.

I must warn you: in the real world, these cars were rather difficult to drive, with a very touchy rear end. At the slightest touch of the accelerator pedal, the rear of the car would pout at you, despite the huge spoilers.

LA Canyons

mclaren gt3 v2

Let’s end with a chill mod. LA Canyons is a highly detailed representation of the winding roads surrounding Los Angeles, more specifically in the city’s mountains and canyons. You’ll have a mod that lets you drive in an open world on dozens of kilometers of roads detailed both in curves, tunnels and bends, but also in terms of landscape. In fact, if you’re a car fan, this is a must-do experience at least once in your life. It’s definitely one to add to your bucket list.

What is a mod?

According to Wikipedia, a mod is “a modification by a third party of an existing video game, in the form of a plugin that is added to the original, to add functionality or modify existing features”. In other words, a mod is an alteration of a video game by adding new features, a new story or new graphical, technical or functional elements, in order to make a significant change to the base game. These mods are often created by members of the community, and sometimes even by independent developers.

In sim-racing, there are several mods: you have those for weather, others for adding competitions, cars or circuits, and some even for altering vehicle behavior.

Installing mods on Assetto Corsa

Before we go any further, I’d like to address a point concerning the installation of mods on Assetto Corsa. Many drivers are new to sim-racing, and this article aims to help them not only discover the best mods in the game, but also install them.

First of all, you’ll need to download the first mod we’ve seen, the Content Manager. You’ll find it on this website and simply launch the executable file and follow the steps to install this content management mod. It’s a must-have, as we’ve already seen.

Then search the Internet for the mod you want to install. Most are compatible with Content Manager, which you can use to install any mod on Assetto Corsa.

To install a mod, simply download it and drag the compressed file (.zip) into the Content Manager interface. The Content Manager will relay the file and begin installing the mod. Once the operation is complete, you’ll be notified and simply need to launch an Assetto Corsa session to play it.
