When we say racing simulation game, or racing game at all, we immediately think of the Gran Turismo saga. Let’s face it: it was one of the first rather realistic racing video games on Playstation, and over the years, the title hasn’t lost its flame, even if many competitors have since emerged. But Gran Turismo will always remain the go-to for many Playstation racers, which makes it the envy of many, I must say.

As you know, this saga is exclusive to Sony’s console, and has been since the first opus developed by Polyphony Digital in 1997. Although other titles have appeared on Playstation and its competitor, Xbox, Gran Turismo remains a must-have, and PC racers could well benefit from it.

Sony’s assault on PC

Over the past 5 years or so, many Sony exclusives have been ported to PC. Uncharted, The Last of Us, God of War, Ratchet and Clank, but also Spider-man and Ghost of Tsushima, all these titles were released on Playstation, then moved on to Windows. Admittedly, these First Party games were not ported directly to PC, as Sony preferred to wait a while and recoup its investment before offering us a PC version. And this shows Sony’s new determination to conquer another platform, not only to diversify its player base, but also to bring more cash into the company’s coffers.

Virtually all the Japanese giant’s big titles have been ported to PC, with the exception of Gran Turismo. Even God of War, the goose that lays the golden eggs, has seen its last two opuses released on PC, albeit with a negligible delay. And what about GT7?

Gran Turismo 7 on PC coming soon

According to a rumor circulating on the net, Gran Turismo 7 should be coming soon to PC. And the rumor in question comes from an employee of Nixxes, the studio responsible for the bulk of Playstation game ports to PC, and according to this person, GT7 was due to hit the Steam and Epic Games Store online stores sometime in 2024.

But now it’s December, and there’s still no news about Gran Turismo 7 on gaming’s most powerful platform. It’s possible that Sony has decided to delay the title until 2025, in order to have more time to optimize its little gem. And that’s understandable, too, when you consider that PC configurations are not only diverse, but can be quite unrivalled in terms of power, which could pose major optimization problems for the title.

Could Microsoft and Xbox be facing a competitor on their own turf?

Sony has its Gran Turismo racing simulation, and Microsoft has its Forza Motorsport on PC and Xbox. And with the purchase of ZeniMax and Activision Blizzard, Microsoft and Xbox have strengthened their position in the gaming industry, both on PC and Xbox. These two acquisitions have cost the American company an enormous amount of money (more than 80 billion US dollars), all to secure First Party titles that will be integrated into Game Pass, on both Xbox and PC. This change of vision was made for the simple reason that subscription-based services are far more profitable in the long run than a console or a game, and everyone knows that the PS5 and Xbox Series are sold at a loss by their manufacturers.

And when you look at the whole scene, you can see that Microsoft has understood that it won’t win against Sony, at least in terms of console sales (65 million PS5s sold versus 28 million Xbox Series). And Xbox remains the undisputed king in terms of service offering, with its Game Pass, which is honestly very interesting for ordinary gamers. Why buy a €70 game when you can get a catalog of over 400 titles for €120 a year? In my opinion, Microsoft and Xbox aren’t threatened by Sony on their own turf, especially when you consider that Call of Duty has been taken over by the Redmond firm.

We can only hope that 2025 will be the year GT7 is released on PC, so that we can fully enjoy it as a sim-racer, especially with a high-end setup.
