Our rating : 9.7/10
Today, there are many brands manufacturing and marketing sim-racing peripherals. Some of the best-known are Asetek, Thrustmaster, Fanatec, and even Simagic, Moza, Simlab, and many others. While these brands dominate the market, others are working to offer a more exclusive experience. Such is the case of Bavarian SimTec a German company specializing in ultra-high-end sim-racing.
The brand’s catalog mainly comprises steering wheels, along with sim-racing accessories. At the top end of the range, we have the OmegaPro V2, a Formula-type steering wheel that’s very selective about the drivers it works with. In what follows, we’ll take a look at its performance on our setup.
Main and technical features of the steering wheel
- 30 cm diameter with rectangular shape typical of Formula wheels
- 4.3” diagonal faceplate display
- SimHub and PC compatible
- 1.25 kg on the scale
- Aluminum structure machined by CNC machines
- 23 total controls (front + rear) and 6 paddles
- Standard 6×70 mm mounting pattern
- Available with QR for Simucube bases and spacers if required
- RevLED on the top of the screen, with RGB on the sides too
Design
Let’s start with the OmegaPro V2’s design.
It’s a Formula-style steering wheel with lots of color on the front. Almost all controls are illuminated by RGB, whether buttons or rotarys. But the centerpiece is the 4.3″ screen that occupies the center of the faceplate. It’s good-looking, displays telemetry data that can be set via SimHub, and is a very good size.
For the rest of the steering wheel, the grips are open downwards at a 13° angle to improve grip, and therefore grip in full race. The steering wheel’s structure is entirely in aluminum, CNC machined. This gives it a premium feel, without the need for carbon fiber. The OmegaPro V2 is a handsome steering wheel, a little overdone in the RGB department in my opinion, but I have to say it suits it very well.
Customized assembly
As this is a steering wheel that is intended for use on several bases from different brands, the OmegaPro V2 offers a standard 6×70 mm mounting system at the rear. The brand also provides a QR compatible with Simucube bases, which can be purchased at the same time as the wheel, as well as spacers.
The steering wheel comes with an aviation-type cable (Lumberg) and USB-A on the other side for connection to PCs.
Manufacturing and finishing
The OmegaPro V2 uses 6061 aluminum and CNC machining. The entire structure is made of a “2D shell” to provide a high level of resistance for the weight (1.25 kg on the scale), and I can tell you that it’s tough stuff.
The steering wheel is very rigid, showing no flex when you manipulate it in your hands. It’s solid, premium, well made and, above all, beautifully finished. All the OmegaPro V2’s buttons don’t catch on use, and the handles feel very good in your hands. It’s a silicone-type material, but that’s the norm on the market and in motorsport competitions.
Handling the steering wheel
The OmegaPro V2 is 30 cm in diameter, with a rectangular shape typical of Formula steering wheels. The driving position is 09H15, with handles angled at 13° to improve grip.
As for the controls, they’re practically all close to your fingers, making them easy to use in the middle of a race. At the rear, there are 6 paddles with adjustable spacing, and Quick Action Buttons on the indexes, just above the paddles.
The centerpiece of the faceplate is the 4.3″ display. Compatible with the SimHub ecosystem, it allows total customization of the telemetry display. Immersion is completed by an intuitive set of LEDs: a top bar for engine speed and six side indicators dedicated to flags or the traffic detection system (spotter).
Sensations during play
In terms of feel, the BavarianSimTec OmegaPro V2 shines in terms of ergonomics. The real highlight lies in the handles: their 13° inclination offers a natural, highly efficient grip. Although the steering wheel is designed for Formula, this geometry makes it surprisingly versatile, whatever the vehicle category. Add to this a grip of rare quality, and you get a driving comfort that allows you to go from one lap to the next without the slightest fatigue.
All buttons and other controls are positioned within millimetre of your hands, and the same applies to the paddles on the back of the steering wheel. The gearshift paddles are a little noisy in standard configuration, but the manufacturer has included pads in the box to reduce the noise.
It’s hard to put into words the pleasure and sensations offered by this steering wheel. You really need to have the OmegaPRO V2 in your hands to grasp its quality. For me, it’s quite simply one of the best Formula wheels I’ve tested to date.
Compatibility
There’s no point in kidding yourself. OmegaPro V2 is only compatible with PCs, and SimHub for everything to do with RBG, dashboard, button mapping and so on.
Value for money
Well, this steering wheel is expensive. Very expensive. It’s a steering wheel that evolves on a range of ultra-premium peripherals, and that comes at a price.
The OmegaPro V2 retails for around €2,200. As I said above in the disadvantages section, this wheel costs more than a full sim-racing setup.
My verdict
The OmegaPRO V2 is a luxury pleasure for the most discerning enthusiasts. Admittedly, the price is commensurate with its exclusivity, but for those who take the plunge, the reward is immediate: immersion and precision in F1 that have, to date, few equals.
